Violin and Violin Lessons for All
Philosophy
I started taking Suzuki violin lessons when there was only one teacher in Denver using Dr. Suzuki’s method. I have seen how schools and traditional methods have adopted many of the tenets of Suzuki method. Even when I use a more traditional method of teaching I often will encourage students to use some of the aspects of Suzuki method, such as listening to music, and reviewing previous pieces.

I strongly believe that everyone can learn to play violin or viola and achieve a high level with their playing. Everyone can play beautifully with correct intonation (in tune), fabulous musicality, good posture and positioning and be a joy to hear. I believe the playing level you achieve is directly related to how much you work at playing. It is the minutes you put in on the instrument that will make you a fine violinist or violist.

I use positive encouragement with my students. I believe people respond better to being encouraged in a positive way rather than being made to feel badly about themselves or skills. It is difficult for a student to learn, if they are not comfortable in their environment.

During the lesson, I will clearly communicate what the student needs to work on at home and the process for working on it. It is important to the student’s progress that the student knows what and how to practice. I will show the student how to break things into small bits, which greatly increases the student’s success and feeling of accomplishment.
